Below is the first few paragraphs of Bogong’s Year – a new project I’ve just begun. You can follow it by clicking here or via the Brian tab above – Brian>Current projects>Bogong’s Year.
“There are some times when you realise that the passage of time has been less a passage and more a torrential flow. I always like ‘passage’ because it gives the impression, at least in my mind, of some kind of orderly movement. Torrent however raises something quite different in my mind – being swept away and reaching for hand-holds. Today was one of those times when you realise that the passage of time was more torrent….
I’d been wanting to undertake the Bogong’s Year project for way too many years and I never quite got there – I was living overseas, or I was doing something else which took me away from the idea (geographically as well as intellectually). As I look back at old note books I realise just how many times this project has almost started, only to be shelved for another ‘little’ while (‘little’ being a comparative word). And these notebooks tell me how long it’s actually been – let’s just say lots of years between thinking and doing.
But now it’s time for the ‘doing’. It’s January 2017 and it’s time to begin Bogong’s Year, a project where I visit Mt Bogong and its landscapes once a month for a twelve-month period, to chart seasonal changes, the uses of the landscape, and my engagements with it.”
