Middle range, Indian Himalaya
This image is one of the middle ranges of the Indian Himalaya – a place that sits between the lower mountains which stretch down to the vast Gangetic plain, and the high Himalaya with its soaring peaks.
In these locations villagers tend to depend on small-scale agriculture and some herding. Livelihood pressures are diverse, with the scale of agriculture, the lack of access to markets and the migration of men to the plains in search of work being significant amongst them. Increasingly, attempts are being made to diversify these livelihoods through activities such as nurseries, growing medicinal herbs, and traditional handcrafts.
