Welcome to my site.
I’m a researcher, writer and adviser who focuses on sustainable landscapes.
My work is at the intersection of people, communities, nature and culture. I’m a big believer that we all have capacities to be actively engaged in looking for better futures through understanding the shape of these connections. If we understand these, we can develop a fuller understanding of options for sustainable futures and how to achieve them – whether they be at a local, national or international scale.
An important part of this is understanding the rights of local people and their communities, in terms of their participation in decisions impacting on their sustainable landscapes and their sustainable futures. I’ve worked using these ideas for the last 25+ years in Australia, the Asian region and beyond.
Most of my work is focused on communities who are sustaining, or wanting to sustain, their landscapes. Their connections to their landscapes, their deep understanding of the challenges they face and their role as social actors in their sustainable futures, is always positive to understand and build on.
I’ve been working on this and related things for 25+ years in various places around the world, but in particular the Asian region. Consequently, there’s a collection of experiences which I bring to my current work, but also friendships made and an on-going recognition of the enormous potential and creativity of those who I have worked with at various scales. They are important reminders that, given opportunities, we are all able to engage with these issues of sustainability and sustainable futures – we all have contributions to make.
Here on my site are ideas, resources and information for agencies, for communities, and for others who are interested in this. These are all drawn from my professional life and my professional practice.
The ‘Sustaining landscapes’ section sets out some information about my view of landscapes and why they are an important focus and the ‘Collaboration’ section focuses on how we can collaborate on all of this through my professional practice. Hopefully you’ll also find some of the blog posts interesting. In case all that isn’t enough, you can find out more about both the site and me at the ‘About’ section and the ‘Brian’ section.
We are all trying to achieve the same thing – a sustainable future for landscapes and the people who live in them.
This site, and its community, is an important part of my ongoing contribution to supporting sustainable landscapes, whether that be through my professional advising or through my writing.
Join in the community, join in the conversations, contact me to start some conversations and, in any case, come back often.
